Steps To Obtain a Medical Cannabis Card

Since the repeal of the 37% excise tax in July 2024, we have had numerous inquiries about how to obtain a Medical Cannabis Card in Washington State.

Here are the steps.

To become a medical marijuana patient in the state of Washington, there are several key factors to consider before making an appointment with your chosen medical provider to get your authorization form. You MUST have:

Proof of Residency in Washington State

(can be any ONE of the following)

  • One-year domicile in the state of Washington

  • Government-issued photo ID

  • Residential Lease/Property Deed

  • Utility Bill or Letter from the Government/Court

  • Bank Statement

  • Car Registration

  • Legal Notarized Affidavit of Residence

2. You must also meet certain qualifying health conditions:

  • Cancer, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), multiple sclerosis, epilepsy or other seizure disorders, or spasticity disorders.

  • Intractable pain is limited to unrelieved by standard medical treatments and medications.

  • Diseases, including anorexia, resulting in nausea, vomiting, wasting, appetite loss, cramping, seizures, muscle spasms , and/or spasticity.

  • Chronic renal failure requiring hemodialysis.

  • PTSD

  •  Crohn’s disease with debilitating symptoms unrelieved by standard treatments or medications.

  • Traumatic brain injury

3. If you meet the qualifying health conditions, you must schedule an appointment with a physician who will issue you an Authorization Form.

In SW WA, there are two providers:

4. Schedule an appointment at a Medically Endorsed Dispensary

Call beforehand to make sure they have staff to meet you.

Your card is good for one year and can be used at any dispensary.

Bring your photo ID and the endorsement from your physician along. The dispensary will enter your information into the state database and print your medical card for you (be sure to come to the appointment "camera-ready" as your picture will be taken and printed on your card).
