Last summer’s homegrown cannabis flower was to test out some cultivars that were created the previous 2021 season and to see the phenotype, genotype and chemotype expressions in some exciting genetic creations. So many new terpenes, flavors and highs as well! Here we go!
The summer of 2022 was memorable for being wet early and then bone dry for its entire time until fall. These are pretty ideal growing conditions and with a healthy diet of organic nutrients and fresh water the flower’s really expressed all of their potential.
There were 4 cultivars that I grew out of the open pollination seed run of 2021: Oakbrook OG, ZOIL, Hot Wheels and SoilOG F2. The seeds were popped in May and went outside into a wet early June until they found their forever homes. The Oakbrook OG and Soil F2 were raised in containers and the others were in a raised bed.
The Oakbrook OG is a cross of (GG4 x SoilOG) and very much leans on the Glue in expression: branchy with large leaves and spear shaped flowers that are more airy in appearance. No purple per say but a nice yellowing and fade towards harvest. The smell is that of chocolate, diesel gas and forest with a strong similarity in its taste.
An any time of day smoke, the high is uplifting and mood enhancing then relaxing and chill, a true hybrid experience. Mold and pest resistance is there and finishes the first week of October. This checks the boxes.
The next cultivar was kind of a mystery at first but became very clear as the season wore on. This strain was originally called ApeSoil because it appeared to have Grape Ape with a grape smell and taste in the final product but it did not have the same growth morphology as most grape strains. Except for Zkittles which is a cross of Grapefruit and Grape Ape and grows and flowers fast...
This discovery led to the name ZOIL which is (Zkittles x SoilOG) and it’s a heavenly example of terpene expression and my favorite plant to smoke. It had 2 phenotypes that showed up, one leaning towards the Zkittles with a lot of lateral branches and huge flowers while the other was very upright and smaller dense flowers along the entire stalk more like the SoilOG.
Both plants yield was average, but the flowers were exceptionally nice, a dark jade green with a very silky resin that makes everything sticky.
The best part is the taste and high; one is the flavor of plums, lavender and purple while the other is sweet bubblegum and they are devastatingly strong in a fuzzy warm and red eyed stone. Not very conducive to being productive, ZOIL is awesome to treat PTSD and pain and is a lovely dessert strain.
Our next plants were the twin sisters in the garden, the very impressive Hot Wheelz which is a cross of (Einstein’s Pipe x SoilOG). The genes are from (Gogi Raz x Blueberry) crossed to (SourOG x IllusionOG) and the most complex cross in the stable.
These 2 seedlings were exact copies of each other and the biggest of the year. These girls were huge and pretty epic to behold: 10 feet tall and about as wide with huge arms all the way to a giant central cola. Dark green with fan leaves bigger than a 2 gallon watering can! They exhibit a classic Afghan structure and went the longest in the garden but completely finished by the second week of October.
The flowers were arm size and dense, with an aroma of gas and hash that went from the bottom to the top of the plant and were the year’s biggest yield of nugs. The flavor and high are reminiscent of indica hybrids from the 80s with that gassy, woody and kushy flavor and sedative mood experience. This strain has commercial cultivation potential or for those that have limitations on plant count as it likes to get big.
Last but certainly not least is the SoilOG F2 that is (SourOG x Illusion OG) crossed to itself that made a better version of its original stock as is the goal of the F2 generation. This girl was awesome with her lime green color upright structure with fewer laterals and consistent colas of dense flowers- and a lot of them. Her fade had zero purples to it but yellows and light green until the finish on the first of October harvest and probably done sooner.
The flowers were aromatic in an old Kush sort of way with gas, woods and moss and sour prevalent and carried into the taste with the crystals a sandy type that covered every bracht of the medium dense nugs.
The high from this F2 is a more functional any time type that is motivating and still relaxing and truly enjoyable, it gets used often for its even keel headband effect and Kush flavor. There was also a single seed discovered in the SoilF2 that will be grown in summer of 2023, bringing it to F3.
Overall the genetics created in the backyard in 2021 based on the (SourOG x IllusionOG) have performed beyond expectations in the garden of 2022 with some unexpected gems emerging and giving exciting results to carry forward. The Oakbrook OG, ZOIL, Hot Wheelz and SoilOG F2 will be joined by other projects down the line so stay tuned for updat
