A 2019 Forbes article detailed how U.S. Universities offer cannabis-focused programs and even two-year master’s degrees as cannabis business grows into a billion-dollar industry and with 33 states endorsing medical cannabis.
There are now programs on cannabis law and policy, such as; Vanderbilt’s law school which offers “Marijuana Law and Policy,” Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law provided a “Marijuana Law, Policy and Reform” seminar, and the University of Washington has a class on “Medicinal Cannabis and Chronic Pain.
The University of Maryland is offering the first pharmaceutical cannabis graduate program as a Master of Science (MS) in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics.
It provides students with the knowledge they need to support patients and the medical cannabis industry, adds to existing research, and develops well-informed medical cannabis policy.
The two-year program based at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Md., blends online instruction with face-to-face experiences to prepare graduates to respond to the increasing demand for medical cannabis with an understanding of the basic science and clinical uses of the cannabis plant.
The program is designed for individuals who possess a bachelor’s degree and currently work in or are interested in pursuing a career in the medical cannabis industry.

Following a two year hiatus during the pandemic, the president and vice president of Cannabis Patient’s PNW are currently teaching a 5-week 10-hour Spring class which will be offered again in the Fall of 2022.

Offering cannabis science curriculum in higher education is a hopeful trend and much needed to educate medical professionals and policy makers about the medical benefits of cannabis.
This is heartening for medical cannabis patients who desire to have a supportive and transparent conversation with their health care providers.
