This cultivar was created last summer in 2021 with an open pollination project all based on the outcrossing of Sour OG x Illusion OG.
Originally bred by Green Bodhi and Tiger Trees, this was a limited collaboration between these two legendary Oregon breeders and I selected and grew out what is now known as SoilOG. This male was allowed to pollinate the entire garden of 8 selected female cultivars and there are literally thousands of seeds.
One of the most intriguing females was a very dark green and upright plant, medium sized with nice flowers that reeked of grape, lavender and candy with a bit of nag champa and petrol mixed in. Highly resinous and delicious with a very calming and centered high, it reminded me of the cultivar Grape Ape but it was not as purple or slow growing small and stout.
It was the favorite smoke of last year’s season but remained somewhat of a mystery. Seeds were healthy and prolific so the hope to find out more was in the genetics that were created as the parent stock was gone. The seeds were labeled as ApeSoil with the mother listed as (Grape Ape x GG4) and the father as (Soil) that was a good approximation of the lineage.
About halfway through May of 2022, germination of all the SoilOG genetics was underway and 3/6 of the ApeSoil came up (which is not a stellar rate of new seeds admittedly). They transitioned their way to the outside world in a red Solo cup to find a forever home in an organic raised bed around the 15 of June.
The three seedlings were always distinct, the number 1 and 3 were replicas of each other and the number 2 was kind of the runt, long and spindly that seemed slower overall and I wondered if I should have culled it. But I did not and something special came out!
The 1 and 3 were also very similar to the mother in structure and growth, so I began ruminating about other cultivars that had this broad leaf growth structure with deep dark green leaves that smells like candy grape. By the time they sexed I realized it was the strain Zkittles, a cross of Grape Ape x Grapefruit x mystery strain out of Northern California.
Number 3 was a male and left the garden but number 1 and 2 remained. Flowers were beginning to form and these plants stretched out with the number 1 branching while the 2 went straight up reaching for the sun. The flowers formed similarly with numerous sites up the stalk while the number 1 had a more open structure with flowers forming at the ends of the branches.
Number 1 and her mother turned out almost identical with big colas of grapey candy gas buds. Unfortunately the cabbage moths also loved her and wreaked some havok, there were no other issues with bugs, pm or rot but some caterpillars eating buds. Overall the 1 was awesome and I’m grateful to report it just like the mom, Zkittles.
Number 2 seemed a little more resilient although over 10 feet tall and did not have the caterpillars really and just a different expression of the genes. It was a beautiful mix of both parents in equal amounts and really showed their best in the number 2. The flowers are smaller but dense and covered in a silky resin.
The terpenes are superior to the parents and a unique and desirable mix. It’s very sweet and candy forward with gassy lavender in the background and very much resembles bubblegum! A delectable and palate pleasing flavor that remains through the entire joint, which then quickly leads to the centered and grounding high associated with Zkittles.
It’s very relaxing but not sedating and it’s euphoric and happy, which makes me feel happy too! I made a cultivar that checks the boxes and excites me to further explore the potential in the mash up of genes that last summer brought. The ApeSoil was one of 8 crosses from 2021 so there’s plenty to explore. Happy growing and blessings for the holidays
